Honest questions every dad should ask himself
You know the feeling.
You're in the middle of another chaotic day—work deadlines, school runs, bedtime battles—and you wonder: Am I doing this right? Am I the dad my kids need?
Most of us rarely pause to ask ourselves the hard questions. We're too busy. Too tired. Too afraid of what the answers might be.
But here's what I've learned: The questions we ask ourselves shape the fathers we become.
This isn't about guilt or shame. It's about growth. The purpose of these questions is to help fathers see how they can grow in their relationships with their children .
📖 Questions About Your Presence
Are You Really There?
"Are you 'the Great Silence' in the house? You're there, but you're not talking. You don't speak when asked a question. You're just busy with your own stuff? Does the house 'die' when you walk in the door?"
Being physically present is not the same as being emotionally present. Ask yourself: When I'm with my kids, am I actually there? Or am I mentally still at work, scrolling my phone, or distracted by my own thoughts?
The Hard Question:
"Would your children like to visit you 40 years from now—in light of how you behave towards them daily?"
How Do You Spend Your Time?
"A little boy overheard his father say, 'My time is money.' One day, full of hope, the boy walked into his father's study and handed his father money in a bottle. He saved everything possible for more than a year and asked, 'Dad, is this enough to buy an hour of your time so that you will come and kick the ball in the park with me?'"
This story cuts to the heart of what kids really want from us: not our money, but our time. Our presence.
The Hard Question:
"What do your children believe about themselves? How much of what they think of themselves is because of your words and actions towards them?"
🗣️ Questions About Your Words
How Do You Speak to Your Kids?
"If you heard someone else talking to your kids the way you sometimes do, how would you react?"
This question is both uncomfortable and necessary. If we heard another adult speaking to our children with harshness, sarcasm, or disrespect, we'd be furious. Why is it acceptable when we do it?
The Hard Question:
"Do you yell at your children? Do you think God wants you to yell at them? Is God yelling at you?"
What Do Your Words Teach Them?
"What do you spend your money on? Would your children respect you if they knew what you were spending your money on?"
Our kids are always watching. They see what we value by how we spend our time and money. They hear how we talk about others. They notice when our words don't match our actions.
The Hard Question:
"Are you teaching your child that truth is non-negotiable? Not to lie—not to lie to yourself and to live in such a way that it is unnecessary to lie?"
❤️ Questions About Your Relationship
For Fathers of Sons
"If you are your son's first hero, are you acting like his hero should?"
You ARE his hero—whether you're acting like one or not. He WILL seek to emulate you, whether he should or not. Every boy starts off wanting to be like his dad .
The Hard Question:
"Do you treat your son with respect—do you treat him like a man and make him feel like a man, or is he on the receiving end of your ridicule, venom, and sarcasm? Do you humiliate your son in front of other people?"
For Fathers of Daughters
"Are you modeling a man worthy of your daughter's love?"
You are the entire blueprint for the type of man she will seek. What kind of blueprints are you giving her?
The Hard Question:
"How do your actions and words make your daughter feel? Special? Will she hope that one day her husband will talk to her and treat her the way you did?"
For All Fathers
"Do you tell your children when you have learned something from them?"
This question reminds us that fatherhood is a two-way street. Our kids teach us as much as we teach them—if we're humble enough to learn.
The Hard Question:
"Ask them what there is about your behaviour that they don't like—and change it."
📚 The Five Core Areas of Fatherhood
The National Fatherhood Initiative identifies five areas every father should evaluate:
1. Self-Awareness
"The 24/7 Dad is aware of himself as a man and aware of how important he is to his family. He knows his moods, feelings, emotions; capabilities, strengths, and challenges."
Question: How well do I know myself?
2. Caring for Self
"The 24/7 Dad takes care of himself. He gets annual physicals, eats right, exercises, and learns about the world he lives in."
Question: How well do I care for myself?
3. Fathering Skills
"The 24/7 Dad knows his role in the family. He knows he should be involved in the daily life of his children."
Question: If you weren't in the family, would anyone notice based on the daily household tasks?
4. Parenting Skills
"The 24/7 Dad uses discipline to teach and guide his children, not to threaten or harm them."
Question: How well do I parent?
5. Relationship Skills
"The 24/7 Dad builds and maintains healthy relationships with his children, wife, other family members, friends, and community."
Question: How well do I relate?
🔥 The Hero or Villain Test
"Think of your family's life right now as a movie. Imagine someone is watching it up on a screen... In their outsider eyes, are you the Hero of your family's story or the Villain?"
If you feel like the villain in your family's story, you're not alone. But there IS a way out. It starts with being honest about where you are. A GPS can only get you where you're going if it has two locations: where you want to be and where you currently are .
