Your words shape the future of your children—choose them wisely.
A memory surfaces—something your father said to you years ago. Maybe it was a word of encouragement that still lifts you today. Or maybe it was a careless comment that still stings.
Proverbs 18:21 says: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
This is one of the most sobering verses in Scripture. It teaches us that our words are never neutral. They either build up or tear down. They bring life or deal death. And as fathers, we hold this power in our mouths every single day.
📖 What the Bible Says
The book of Proverbs is clear: words have consequences. The tongue can bring healing or cause deep wounds (Proverbs 12:18). It can turn away wrath or stir it up (Proverbs 15:1). It can heal relationships or rupture them (Proverbs 16:28).
The New Testament echoes this truth. James writes that the tongue is "a fire" and "a restless evil, full of deadly poison" (James 3:6,8). With it we bless the Lord, and with it we curse human beings made in God's likeness—and this should not be (James 3:9-10).
Words are seeds. They always produce a harvest—whether good or bad. The same tongue that can speak life-giving encouragement can also speak discouragement that crushes a spirit (Proverbs 15:4).
Your words to your children today will echo in their hearts for decades. You are their primary social world, and the words you speak become the lens through which they see themselves.
🏠 What This Means for Fathers
Your Words Shape Their Identity
Dr. Mike Ayers explains that a father's voice does more than correct or instruct—it shapes identity . His words become the soundtrack your child plays in their own head. A father's approval is something children continue to seek even as adults. Your words to your children today will echo in their hearts for decades.
Life-Giving Words Follow a Pattern
A model from Scripture for speaking life is the way the Father spoke over Jesus at His baptism:
· Words of acceptance: "You are my son." Acceptance communicates that nothing can separate your love from that person.
· Words of affection: "You are my son, whom I love." Don't be afraid to show affection. In a generation that often uses cruel, harmful language, speak love and kindness.
· Words of affirmation: "I am well pleased." Find the good in someone and point it out. Speaking words of affirmation, love, and encouragement builds people up.
Your Words Need to Match Your Life
A father's words have to be consistent with his life. That doesn't mean perfection—it means authenticity. Your children are watching. They can sense hypocrisy. The words you want them to live by must be the words you're living by too.
A Father’s Voice Must Be a Voice of Blessing
The Bible speaks of the power of a father's blessing—a legacy of words that affirm identity, purpose, and destiny. When a father speaks blessing over his child, he's not just being nice—he's speaking God's truth into their future. "The tongue of the wise brings healing" (Proverbs 12:18).
💡 How a Father Can Apply It Today
1. THINK Before You Speak
Use this acrostic to filter your words:
· T – Is it True?
· H – Is it Helpful?
· I – Is it Inspiring?
· N – Is it Necessary?
· K – Is it Kind?
2. Speak Words of Encouragement
Paul describes the kind of words a father should use: encouraging, comforting, and urging . The Greek word for encouragement is parakaleo—"to call alongside." A father calls his children alongside him, urging them forward with words that build up.
Script:
"I believe in you. I see who you're becoming, and I'm proud of you."
3. Acknowledge Their Emotions
Research shows that fathers who acknowledge their children's sadness and emotions build stronger, more resilient kids.
Script:
"I can see you're hurting. That's okay. I'm here with you."
4. Be Authentic
Your children need to see you fighting the battles you want them to fight. They need to see you committed to the same ideals you place before them.
Script:
"I'm learning too. I'm not perfect, but I'm trying. And I want to help you grow."
5. Speak Life, Not Judgment
God assigns fathers to guide their children to fear the Lord and become useful. This task is not easy—but it's a holy calling.
Script:
"I see good in you. I see who you're becoming. And I'm so glad you're mine."
6. Forgive and Speak Grace Over Past Mistakes
If you've spoken words you regret, it's never too late to repent and ask for forgiveness. God's grace is sufficient. You can start today, even if you've failed before. Let your first step be to say, "I was wrong. Will you forgive me?" Then begin speaking life.
🛑 What to Avoid
What Not to Say Why It Hurts
"You're so lazy/stupid/careless." Labels become identity
"Why can't you be more like..." Comparison crushes spirit
"I'm too busy." Communicates "you don't matter"
"You'll never amount to anything." Destroys hope and future
"Stop crying." Dismisses their emotions
